Subject: [ferrethealth] bald spot
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

hi ive just got 3 ferrets from a friend and they have bald spots on them can anybody tell me what it is and can i do anything for it they are all eating going to the bathroom and playing good

[Please, give more information:
Ages?
Are the bald areas bilateral (pretty much the same on each side)?
Are there any additional symptoms like bruising , spots, swollen
vulvas, anemia, crusting, debris around the eyes or chin or on
feet, brown claws, signs of parasites, etc?
Are you feeding a ferret food?
As you can guess from these questions there are multiple causes
of fur loss and more info will help people figure out which one
you are facing and will have have a veterinarian treat. BTW,
if there are parasites do NOT use over the counter parasite
treatments on ferrets; they have a high risk rate for destroying
the marrow and killing the ferrets.

Do you have a good ferret vet yet? If not, then an initial examination
is in order, anyway. So, go to the FHL Files section and open the
ferret vets file:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ferrethealth/files/
and try
http://www.ferretuniverse.com/vets/vetlist.asp

Have you read or gotten a good basic ferret book like _Ferrets for
Dummies_?

Ferrets require a good amount of veterinary care during their lives
so it would make sense to begin saving specifically for this need;
most of us do.
