Sorry I should have been more clear. I was using the term 'elective' as it is commonly used in medicine, that is, it is surgery that is scheduled in advance as opposed to an emergency situation.
It does not imply that an elective surgery cannot be an 'essential' surgery, which in your case it certainly was.
