Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Abscess near anus on 1 yr old male ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Sounds like your doing good. He definitely needs to get on an antibiotic course. I had a ferret that would get an anal gland infection every now and then. Being a Marshall ferret, he should be descented. Although it is done when they are very young and often the surgery isn't performed by a vet so there may be a piece of it left that is causing trouble. Be aware that is may happen again and do everything you are doing in addition to oral antibiotics. One other thing that I did was flush the abscess with dilute chlorhexidene and put ophthalmic ointment in the abscess. Good luck.

There was hardly a drop of pus draining since Sunday, so I slowed on the compresses and just kept cleaning it and made sure it was draining, so that was probably my mistake. Poor little guy is such a trooper through all this!
