Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Question about post pancreatic surgery, a diabetic ferret, and insulin
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I had a diabetic ferret for 2 years till he passed from cancer. I found Lantus (Insulin Glargine) worked best for him, he needed it twice a day, in amounts from .2 unit to several units using U100 human syringes not U-40 like you use for veterinary insulins.
The lantus takes a couple of days to build up and create a level BG but worked very well for Pippin. With Lantus it is recommended to start at a very small dose and slowly increase if required, even a starting dose of 1 unit may be way too much. I found the 0.03cc syringes with half unit markings worked best for dosing.
