Hi Mike,
I haven't had Giardia but my vet did get a stray ferret in who was infected with it. They undertook extreme measures to make sure it didn't spread. The staff who handled him changed their smocks every time they interacted with him and wore face masks and gloves. Everything was washed down with a 10% bleach solution and he was treated with Metronidazole and retested every week until his stools were free of the parasite.
My vet told me that ferrets generally acquire it from drinking water contaminated with feces and that it was highly contagious. Apparently indoor ferrets can also get it from drinking aquarium water or from other household pets who may be infected with it.
