Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Prednisilone for Lymphoma and High sugar
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever experienced needing to give prednisilone to a ferret to
treat lymphoma, however having the pred cause their sugar to go way too
high?
My ferret had already been being treated with prednisilone for
Insulinoma prior to his dx of Lymphoma (lung tumor). He got .1cc in
the am and 0,05cc in the pm of 10ml/mg prednisilone. His sugar was
maintained very nicely with this.

With his Lymphoma dx, he went up to .15cc 2x daily (every 12 hours).
This brought his sugar up to 254, so he prednisilone dose was lowered
to 0.75cc 2x daily (every 12 hours) and his sugar came down to around
184 and 134. It was decided to bring the prednisilone back up to .15cc
2x daily for the most optimal treatment, as he was having limping in
the front paws. The limping did improve, however the sugar went to
314. So, the prednisilone was once again lowered to 0.1cc 2x daily.
However, the sugar today was 322 (8hrs after last dose), so I was
advised to lower the dose to 0 .7cc. I did so, waited 3-4 hours and
reschecked the sugar.... it was 342. With this I was advised to skip
the moring dose, and reschedk the sugar when the evening dose is due.

Has anyone ever had these issues before? The only other meds he gets
are lassix 1x daily, carafate 3x daily, and albuterol only if needed.
He has been getting ALOT of protien suppliments, as he only will take
water if I warm it and add a little bit of turkey baby food. He gets
this very often as I need to keep him hydrated, he pees often. I dont
know if the increased pred and extra protien are doing the trick. He
is on Essiac, but that should lower the blood sugar if anything.

Thanks again.....trying my best to get my little guy on a good keel.
