Subject: [ferrethealth] Strange death
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
My Pansy was just four years old, robust and active through last Friday
morning. Friday at 2:00 p.m. I found her laying in a semi-circle with her
paws and throat up. I picked her up and found she was already cold. I laid
wrapped her in a towel, and took her to my vet. By the time I reached the
vet, the veins in her toe nails were black. As we watched her normally pink
areas, nose, gums, and finally skin turned black. Subsequent necropsy and
tissue sample testing only confirmed my vet's diagnosis of "circulatory
failure", and did not give us any answers as to what caused this bizarre
death. The areas like the spleen that are normally filled with blood had
drained, and blood filled the intestinal tract and lungs. The blood had
clotted in her veins. (This is as accurate as I am able to recall what I
was told; I was and am still extremely upset by this death and the loss of
this beautiful girl.)
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? If so, have you had any success
determining what happened?
Betty
[Speculation is useless. Pathology by a ferret knowledgeable
veterinary pathologist is essential.
Do not freeze because it bursts cells.
It is best to have the remains in formalin within 12 hours or
too much information will be gone, but some of the organs
begin self-digesting as quickly as 2 hours after death (gall
bladder) in ferrets.
Blood pooling in areas that are down is not uncommon is
any animal after death and causes areas to look black,
purple, or red, so it is a rather usually thing after death and
happens with any cause. Look up lividity. In some pats of
the world hypostasis is a term used, too.
As to blood in the lungs and intestines, that can also be
explained by normal changes after death.
