Your description suggests this is something new for him.

Is he sleeping or is it possible that he is collapsing (i.e. plummeting blood glucose, heart condition, etc.)?

Have you watched what he does leading up to falling asleep? For example do you find him playing one minute and when you turn around he's fallen asleep?

I had a ferret with a second-degree atrioventricular (AV) block that would drop on the spot when her heart stopped. The first time I noticed this she was running with the group and suddenly dropped as though she had been shot. When this happened after she came around she'd be too exhausted to move and would sleep wherever she happened to be. I would move her into her bed of course. I am not implying this is what your ferret has but if this is unusual behaviour for him it bears investigating further.

Have you had his BG checked recently, which is something else that can cause a collapse.

Could he have had a recent episode of accidentaly being almost smothered him when he was curled up in a sleep sack?

I would closely observe him and see if he's behaving oddly before falling asleep.
