I also had a male rescue, Ronan, who would sleep out in the open, in the middle of the floor, etc. His litter habits were terrible as well; corner or not, it just didn't matter to him. He was not the brightest ferret ever, and we rather suspected he just didn't know or care that there were proper places to do these things*. He did not have insulinoma that I was ever aware of, though he did have IBD and later intestinal lymphoma. But his random sleeping habits predated his serious illness, so I don't think they were related.

*slight tangent, if allowed: one day Ronan pooped about six inches from the food dish. Seti, our other ferret at the time, and I spotted it at the same time as I went to fill the dish. Seti gave me an utterly priceless look that said, in nearly exactly so many words, "what sort of cretin have you brought into this house?!?" I miss both those guys, bad bathroom habits and all :-)
