Subject: [ferrethealth] Titers - Cost of Testing
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have just received a reply from my Vet Re: the cost of Distemper Titers:
$61.00 is IMO High.
I am in S.E PA
Those of you that have, or do get titers taken, what do your Vets charge for them, what diagnostic facility do they use, and what area are you in?

[With the studies which had previously covered
parts of the costs finished DO expect the costs
to be higher now while you await data compilation
and both studies being in print (which always takes
a while after submission due to peer reviews, editing,
and then publication timing. Costs were lower before
because the titers were partly subsidized for the studies.

Doing titers might not only tell when the CD vaccine is
not needed, but also might help avoid anaphylactic
reactions since allergic reactions happen when the
immune system over-responds to a known substance
or something closely related to a known substance.

Some tests are very complicated to do and costly to do,
and some can only be done in a few locations. At times
an intermediate lab will charge to send on tests to other
labs, and for the TN Panel that really adds to the costs
compared to sending directly to the U. TN address, but
in that case we are talking in the three figures, not two
figures.
