I did have a ferret, who was put on Ampicillin following a splenectomy and removal of a benign tumor attached to his splene.

He developed large red splotches on his abdomen and I didn't know whether they were an allergic reaction (hives) or internal bleeding. My vet suspected that it was a reaction to the ampicillin so we stopped the ampicillin and he was started on Benadryl and sure enough the hives started fading and within a few days disappeared altogether.

It should be easy enough to determine whether he has mast cell tumors by taking a biopsy of one and sending it to pathology for analysis. I've had a vet do it under local anesthesia.

I've posted the pics of my ferret with hives under - allergic reaction to ampicillin.
