Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Ferret crashes 1 month after Deslorelin implant; questions about Addisons
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have to say that I, in conjunction with my vet gave my diabetic ferret supralorin implants, in fact it seemed to balance his endocrine system and he was feeling better and needing less insulin, almost none in fact.
It is hard to say how much it would have helped as he died from a huge abdominal mass weeks later.
>From that I can feel that they do somehow affect the entire endocrine system to a certain extent. I think it would be far fetched to think it caused an addisons episode however. But I am not a vet that is just my humble opinion. I am sorry for your loss.

[Endocrinology is very complex with certain hormones interacting with
others, and sometimes there is an effect down the line, whereas other
times there does not appear to be an interaction between certain
hormones. In addition, new compounds are being discovered pretty
regularly so it is obvious that not all components of the endocrine
system are known.

That this class of drugs can help ferrets with certain pancreatic
problems has been known for some time and you will find past
vet posts on this. Lupron is in the same class of drugs. See
past posts such as

and

Endocrinology is an incredibly complex web.

If an implant even could be involved in such a way happening a
month later doesn't make sense, but i just don't see a mechanism
for it to do what is asked in the original post.
