Subject: [ferrethealth] Non-regenerative Anemia and Reaction to Shots
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi --
=A0
My ferret, Ziggy, who has non-regenerative=A0anemia,=A0is still hanging in =
there;=A0however, he=A0is slowly regressing.=A0 His hematocrit is now at 13=
% despite the prednisiloneand=A0epogen I am giving him=A0and the blood tran=
sfusion he's recieved.
=A0
He is still eating his soup and, occasionally, he will munch on his kibble.=
Mostly he sleeps, but will=A0get up every now and then to check on everyon=
e before going back to bed.=A0
=A0
At this point, I am satisfied that he still has some quality of life.=A0 He=
appears to have no pain or nausea.=A0He surrounded by humans and ferrets t=
hat adore him, he favorite toys and sleep spots. My prayer is that, when it=
is time (and I am certain it won't be long), that he will fall into a swee=
t sleep and cross peacefully.=A0
=A0
My vet is still working on researching any other possibilitites of interven=
tion to help my little guy, so she has not given up. I trust her -- she is =
very smart -- and she is doing all she can.
=A0
With that said (sorry for the long preamble), I have a question for you. Zi=
ggy has had severe reactions to rabies and distemper shots. I nearly lost h=
im once from a rabies shot. Do you think there is any connection between th=
ese reactions and the non-regenerative anemia he is dealing with now?=A0 Gr=
anted, he not had either shot recently (last rabies was 9/10 and last diste=
mper was one year ago).=A0 I was just wondering if there might be a relatio=
nship between the two.
=A0
Thanks for your help!

[Does this ferret have adrenal disease? That is probably
the single most common cause of non-regenerative
anemia in ferrets.
Has the urine had a specific gravity (concentration)
measurement done to check for kidney disease since
blood tests on that score often don't work as well as one
would like in ferrets?
Has the ferret have over the counter flea preparations
or flea collar used?
Those are three of the causes of such anemia often
encountered on the FHL.
I could not find any references linking
anaphylaxis and non-regenerative anemia,
and I even checked PubMed, plus since my hubby and
I have histories of anaphylaxis we'd have been told by
physicians of any known connection and would be
checked on that score for safety's sake.
