Subject: [ferrethealth] deslorelin and insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have seen the low glucose symptoms in ferrets with insulinoma after deslorelin implants. Was she sleeping more or not eating or playing as much or fatigued? It is possible she did have insulinoma and the symptoms were not noticeable at the time or were missed. I'm sorry for your loss....

With low glucose episodes it can take as long as several hours to get them out of one depending on how severe it is. I've had ferrets almost comatose for 12 hours before finally coming around. During that time they received dexamethasone injections and dribbles of glutose (honey, cake icing, pancake syrup, karo syrup work too), and if conscience enough dribbles of recipe following the sugar (to hopefully avoid a deeper crash).

We check glucose at time of the implant and closely monitor symptoms and blood glucose levels for a few weeks after implants. I've had deslorelin implants not show improvement for up to 6 weeks (and some not at all). I monitor implanted ferrets to see that they are eating regularly with extra recipe/soup servings just in case they have a dip in glucose or they aren't eating enough when I'm at work.
