Subject: [ferrethealth] grainy potty, dirreah

and occ green potty
vet says no parasites.
he put him on carafate and baytril
he is 9 months old and has been sick most of his 9 months of life.
i got him at the pet store he had sinus infection and parasites.
since then he has been on baytril for at least 5 times.

my thoughts are that it might be liver damage due to so much antibodics.
was thinking of milk thistle to help. does anyone know if it is safe for ferrets?

the dr says he may have to be on carafate the rest of his life.

[Those are not symptoms specific to liver problems;
they are instead seen with damage to the small
intestine.

At that age and with the problems always existing it
would pay for you to say what type of parasite was
found in the past, and you have to think about ECE,
and other things that affect the small intestine.

Start with these:

and

http://www.afip.org/consultation/vetpath/ferrets/Ferret%20IBD.pdf

and

http://www.afip.org/consultation/vetpath/ferrets/PDF/Ferret_GI_path_reports.pdf

You can reduce the graininess of the feces by reducing the
amount of fats/oils in the diet. They are clumps of undigested
lipids (fats) which can also catch starches and clump even more
(like rolling balls of butter in flour). They are commonly called
"bird seed stools".
