Subject: [ferrethealth] Adrenal Ferret Help- Suprelorin implant 12+ months ago swollen belly
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Everyone,

I haven't been on here in a while but suppose I am just wanting some advice. I have a 5 1/2 year old spayed female ferret, Dharma. She was diagnosed with adrenal disease around December of 2009. The vet at the time said the implant should last 12-18 months (I know they say 12 but he just said to watch for return of clinical signs before we put in a new one). We went with this based on her age and the results the vet had experienced with the implants. While I know it's not a cure, qualiy of life was my main concern. I really should have taken her in sooner and now am kicking myself but she was going along really well. I had been planning to take her in in the coming weeks for a checkup and new implant but today I noticed she had a hugely distended belly. I had been away over until last night and let them out for their play today. I raced her down to my local vet (not a ferret expert) who suggested we test the fluid and maybe do some blood tests tomorrow. They do have another v
et who knows more about ferrets in tomorrow. He checked her heart which sounded fine. I am pretty concerned as she has had no return of symptoms such as hair loss or vulval swelling. I rang my regular vet who is now over an hour away since I have moved and she is not in there for a couple of days.

I'm guessing her adrenal disease is the cause, it seems a bit of a coincidence if not but tests will confirm. If that is the case I'm not sure what to do next. She has never had a distended abdomen before. If it is due to adrenal is this because the tumours have grown and if so, is replacing the implant likely to do anything or not? Where does the fluid come from? I'm also concerned as the vet I saw today hasn't heard about the use of deslorin/suprelorin in the management of ferret adrenal. Due to her age I'm not sure surgery is an option.

I might be getting ahead of myself but just wanted some thoughts.

Thanks, Natalie
