Subject: [ferrethealth] Post-op Bowel Movements
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My ferret Tia went in for emergency surgery 24 hours ago. The vet found an obstruction in her lower stomach. She was taken to my regular vet when they opened for the day and they treated her with the proper medications and monitored her progress. My vet commented that she had diarrhea but wasn't concerned since it was so close post-op. Tia ate well for the vet around 4pm and I brought her home around 6pm.

She ate a mix of A/D and turkey baby food with water again at 10pm and received her dose of pain medication (buprinex) and antibiotic to get her through the night. She was awake at midnight and ate a little more straight A/D and baby food (no water) off my fingertip.

My concern is that she has not produced another good bowel movement since coming home. She's had 3 small, dark, stringy bowel movements and normal urination. Is this cause for concern? She does not appear uncomfortable at this time. She's quiet from the pain meds but when handled is alert. Can anyone tell me what I should expect to see after invasive stomach and intestinal surgery?

I will be calling my vet's office in the morning at their request just to fill them in on how she's doing. This is the first time I've dealt with obstruction surgery. My luck with adrenal surgeries hasn't been very good so I'm very on edge. Any info would be much appreciated.

Heather
