There are multiple reasons to not use vaccines other than
those which have been sufficiently tested in ferrets.
1. If a modified live vaccine has been grown in ferret cell lines
(and a number are) then that canine distemper vaccine can give
canine distemper to ferrets.
2. If the vaccine is a combination vaccine which has a number
of unneeded vaccines in it then the risk of an allergic reaction
may be increased and ferrets are already quite prone to allergies.
(This tendency to allergic reactions is also why a number of us
have begun using titers before giving canine distemper vaccinations.)
3. If the vaccine is not tested for safety it might have serious
side effects in ferrets. Ex: When the rabies vaccines were being
tested for effectiveness in ferrets one of the ones being tested
worked but was very prone to causing severe side effects.
(Those ferrets were not sacrificed, but were adopted by a vet
who worked for the largest ferret farm in the U.S. at that time
and she gave them specialized care and loads and loads of love.)
4. If the vaccine has not be sufficiently tested in ferrets it simply
might not work. Again, back to when rabies vaccines were being
tested: one of those which works longer in other species only
worked for 6 months in ferrets so pursuing acceptance of that
one was ended. (And now you know part of how the field got
narrowed to IMRAB3)
Vaccines need to fit a lot of criteria to be accepted: work for at
least a year with as low a number of side effects and reactions
as can be expected for the species in question, and not themselves
cause disease in the given species.
