Subject: [ferrethealth] We learned something that might help ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
When Steve or I have a medical experience
ourselves which might have some overlap
for ferrets we try to learn so that they can
be helped, too.
Right now along with an antibiotic I am on
a short course of Prednisone to breathe
better. (Yes, my ophthalmologist okayed it
so don't worry. I just need it now.)
Anyway, knowing that those meds can cause
stomach discomfort I ate first and guess what
I learned? I learned that I also needed to put
some food on top of the meds or my stomach
really felt them a lot.
Of course, it is important to NOT take those
meds to temperatures outside their ranges
until they are already in the body, so with ferrets
never heat meds in food, and if you give meds in
food check first with the vet or pharmacist to
make sure that is okay, and make sure the food
is not outside the safe temperature range. In such
situations with ferrets getting Prednisolone we tend
to give food then meds and then some more food.
The second bout of food was to get the taste away
and be a reward to be desired, but it turns out that
it can serve more of a purpose if their experience
with needing food afterward, too, is the same as mine
in relation to nausea and discomfort.
