lab report on removed tumour

Diagnosis.
Low grade spindle cell tumour

Histology
The sample removed is cutaneous tissue mass from the right front paw.

Epidermis covering the tissue is hyperplastic and non ulcerated. It has prominent keratin layer. The underlying area is occupid by a mass of collagen cells in which there are proliferating spindle shaped cells. The proliferating spindle shaped cells occur haphazardly. Connective tissue stroma is oedematous. Mitotic figures and scanty.

Comment.
The findings are those of low grade spindle cell tumour, probably low grade fibrosarcoma. Low grade fibrosarcoma infiltrates tissues locally and usually does not metastasise. Because of its infiltrative nature it is sometimes difficult to excise completely and recurrences of the tumour do occur. Wide excision margins are recommended. In this case the tumour tissue appears to be excised but prognosis should be cautious.

Hopefully Sugar will not have recurrence of this tumour as it was encapsulate in a baloon-like structure only attached to her foot at a single point like the neck of the baloon. It was removed by my vet, a very meticulous surgeon who does the neatest work I have ever seen

Tony, Sugar and Suki.
In memory of Sally and Sue.

> Well, Sugar was at the vets yesterday to have a pea sized smooth growth removed from the underside of her right front paw adjacent to the rear (heel) pad. This grew very quickly in 6-8 days, but she gave no sign that it was giving her any trouble or pain. Tissue has been sent the lab for histology. I hope that the result is not going to be bad news.
