Subject: [ferrethealth] insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Annabelle is about 6 yrs old and has insulinoma and adrenal disease she takes prednisolone and carafate. Last Friday I noticed she was unable to walk on her hind legs. And was very thin(skin and bones you can count all her bones in her body)so that told me she had not been eating. Little did I know she was not drinking either. I started force feeding her water and chicken baby food. I did that for 4 days. I also noticed she had sores on the inside of the upper lip. On Monday she had dark black stools. So I immediately thought an ulcer. Also on monday she started eating the baby food on her own. Tuesday I took her to the vet and they told me exactly what I already knew. They gave her ammoxicillin for the sores and ulcer. and told me not to give her the pred until the black stools cleared up When she went poo tuesday night it was normal color but runny. They gave me some carnivore care to feed her every 4 hours. It has almost been a week and she is still not using her back legs even with taking the pred. Any suggestion would help.

(The ulcer protocol is Amoxicillin AND Biaxin for a minimum of 14 days. Amoxicillin alone is not sufficient. The carafate should still be continued. The Carnivore Care can be mixed with A/D. Add the Carnivore Care to the A/D and mix it together. She may require more aggressive veterinary intervention to stabilize her, e.g. IV with dextrose. I would take her back to your vet pronto, have a BG test to see if her BG is so low that its impeding her ability to function and discuss options e.g. switch to diazoxide. Moderator TD)
