Subject: [ferrethealth] Sudden return of adrenal symptoms?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Stout is a 6 year old male ferret who received a Deslorelin implant in February after displaying adrenal disease symptoms: difficulty urinating, loss of muscle tone, loss of hair, overall weakness. He's been doing absolutely wonderfully so far and had a complete regression of his symptoms.
My husband and I left for a two-day trip (left late Wednesday, back Friday evening) with someone stopping in to check on the ferrets 1-2 times a day. Of course when we got home this evening after vet offices were closed, Stout seems ill again. Massive flattening/lethargy, weakness in his hind end especially on waking, and straining to urinate/defecate. It's not clear that he was eating as much as he normally does, though he has previously gone on hunger strikes when my husband leaves for trips. We've been syringe feeding him Bob Church's chicken gravy every few hours to make sure he's getting food into his body.
I'm in a tizzy over how quickly this appeared. I will be taking him to the local animal hospital (Angell Memorial) in the morning, but they do not have an exotics veterinarian in until Monday. How could these symptoms appear so rapidly? Can the hospital do anything other than palliative care until the exotics veterinarian can see him?
[Ferrets can plummet fairly quickly, especially if he wasn't eating because he was grieving your absence. It could have caused a cascade of things to happen. I would get his BG checked for certain, something any vet can do and I would not wait until the exotics vet returns to take him in. The straining is also a worry given his history and age. - Moderator (TD)]
