Subject: [ferrethealth] Puzzled
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My male ferret is roughly 7 yrs old and has always been in excellent health except: he has lately lost most of his hair..There is no obvious signs of adrenal like swelling of the penis etc...He eats and moves around good and loves to play...Anyone have any idea what is going on? Can this be just old age? Thanks

[He needs to be seen by a ferret knowledgeable veterinarian. It is likely adrenal disease but a vet will have to determine that. The penis does not swell with adrenal disease, the prostate can and that becomes a problem because it can cause a blockage, which is an emergency in a ferret and is fatal without veterinary intervention. I have a 7 year-old who I suspected was showing early signs of adrenal disease, scratching more than normal, some straining when urinating. At his advanced age, I didn't wait. He received a Deslorelin implant and is now an energizer fuzzy. Its like he's a 2 year-old again : )- Moderator (TD)]
