Jeff,

This statement you made is not actually true.

" a coat change does not leave them bald or near bald"

I have had several ferrets that have done this, they were over a year old, were checked by my vet and are healthy. We have to remember that each ferret is an individual and don't always follow text book indications. I had one sprite in the early 2000s that had the hair loss signs of adrenal. My vet did the surgery and found that her adrenals were normal. What we did find was that she had the
begining stages of insulinoma although not showing the signs for it.

Ferrets like people follow genetic codes and just like people can end up loosng hair as they get older without having health issues.

[I believe the 'pattern' of hair loss is the significant factor in determining whether it is a symptom of adrenal disease i.e.,base of tail, symetrically on shoulders, etc. On the other hand it is also possible for a ferret to blow its coat during seasonal shed, however, the hair generally regrows. Whereas, with adrenal disease, without treatment it doesn't come back and baldness/bald patches remain. In a senior ferret the hair can thin but I don't believe there is actual baldness unless adrenal disease is part of the picture. In a sense you are both correct. In any case the ferret in question should be examined by a veterinarian. - Moderator (TD)]
