We have had some with sensitive skin who would lose tail hair for purely dermal reasons. That was just them. Some of them went on to develop adrenal disease in life while others did not. In ferrets who are prone to skin problems the tail and blackheads may just be like my chin is for me and pimples... Individuals do differ in how their largest organ (the skin) behaves for stresses. If the ferret is more likely to get it in the litter pot that seems to increase problems, too, and some seem to itch more easily so scratch their tails more often and aggressively causing fur loss. Some have allergies. Some are prone to dragging their tails over abrasive tunnels or barriers instead of lifting their tails. Things still have to be checked out because untreated adrenal disease does undermine the quality of life and in such cases it always might be adrenal adrenal disease.
