Subject: [ferrethealth] Possible IBD questions
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Hi all,  I'm writing again about my boy Shane.  I wrote in last week, he was in the hosp for diarrhea, dehydration, lethargy and possible off kidney creatitine values, plus he had a foreign body show up on xrays.

Kidney value is back down, he's got more energy to him, he passed the foreign body so it wasn't causing any blockage, as he still has the diarrhea a week later.  He's been to his regular vet and an emergency vet, and they both are leaning towards IBD.  Neither think its intestinal lymphoma, but obviously w/out biopsy they are not sure.  They've done all the fecals, tests... next up is an ultrasound which they both say is the reasonalble next step, concurrently with running food allergy trials.  One vet said it may take up to a couple of months for his poops to normalize if it is a food allergy (he has to have not had any of the allergy-causing ingredient/food for couple of months).  Is that correct?  If so, in the past I've had him on the TF Turkey Lamb Venison, but maybe not for long enough?  Right now I'm trying to see if it is a grain allergy.

For anyone with experience of IBD in ferrets and it was a food allergy, how long did it take for their system to normalize?  His regular vet is trying to avoid an exploratory surgery, but I'm getting nervous that we could be heading that way.  I'd really like to find out if it is a specific food or an ingredient that is causing his diarrhea, but how long should I give each food trial?  I don't want him to have to suffer w/ diarrhea for a few months on grain-free, and only to run another chicken-free diet for a few months... but I do want to give it enough time before we have to undergo any major surgery.  I'd appreciate any info or experiences w/ IBD.  Thank you!!
Andrea
