Hello all,
At Sukie's suggestion I've rejoined this group, my last visit was in 2004 when I lost a ferret to DIM.
I have a 6 y/o neutered MF ferret (Boomer) who developed a large disc shaped lump under his prepuce. My vet removed it and the pathology came back as adenocarcinoma. The margins weren't clean so we have two options, chemo or a 'PU', which she explained to me would be removing his penis and surrounding tissue and making him a her.
My vet has only done this procedure on cats before, not on ferrets. She's offered to bring in another surgeon who has performed this surgery, or to refer me to him outright. I don't have any reservations of my vets surgical ability but told her if she felt more comfortable having this other vet assist, then financially it was fine with me. So I'm not really concerned about the surgery itself.
The only paper I was able to find that really dealt with this surgery was 10 years old and it stated the prognosis was guarded at best. Have there been advances in the treatment of this cancer, are there others out there who have had ferrets survive this? What can I expect??
Boomer does have insulinoma which we're treating with .2 mL of Pediapred (6.7MG/5mL) three times daily. His over all health is good. He's never been a particularly active ferret, and he's pretty tubby.
Any advice, suggestions for my vet or myself would be most welcomed.
Leslie
