Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Undiagnosed blood in urine.
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have personal knowledge of this situation and it is not a case of not wanting to accept the diagnosis of lymphoma. This person is very aware of what it is and what is coming. The ferret also has been steadily getting better eating on it's own, playing and deciding when it is time to let go is a very personal decision with all cases different. The vet that did the surgery was not very supportive and was confusing so she sought other advice from someone she trusted more. The real question being asked is what could be causing the blood in the urine other than the lymphoma so that it could be treated while the ferret lives out his short life span. This ferret is being loved and treated as best they can and they are trying to improve his quality of life. I have had ferrets with lymphoma go on pred and live many happy months if not a year or more until the disease progresses to where it is best to let go. Letting go is ALWAYS a personal decision and should be treated as such without flaming someone for their unique situation and decisions. And, a good vet regardless of their specialties will know other good vets of other specialties and recognize when something doesn't seem right. The Avian vet happens to be someone in this persons family, is well respected and trusted for his opinions. I urged this person to contact this group for ideas about the urine and am a bit disappointed in the attitude of the response.

[I read the response and found it to be caring and supportive. Like Tressie I was very confused by the post explaining the situation. It seemed like she was describing a metastatic carcinoma to me, which is a terrible diagnosis, often worse than lymphoma in terms of the prognosis. I was composing an e-mail describing my own experience making end of life decisions as well but decided I just wasn't clear about what was going on.

You describe a very different situation, one which sounds much more promising. The question is certainly clearer in your post and I expect you will get very different answers. --Moderator (CMM)]
