Subject: [ferrethealth] Distemper Vaccine
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

IMHO, Purevax may be a very good vaccine; but I have problems with a vaccine
company that only produces their product once a year and if there is no
product to be had what are we shelters to do to protect the ferrets in our
care?

As an FYI, the last Invoice I paid for ferret distemper vaccine (Galaxy-D)
was $212.52 (50 doses) which included shipping, thus each dose cost me $4.25
each. On the other hand, if I purchase Purevax from my vet it is $102.10 for
10 doses, thus $10.21 per dose. Most ferrets coming into our shelter need 2
vaccinations = $8.50 per ferret versus $20.42 per ferret. With approximately
100 ferrets per year into the shelter (this doesn't include ferrets that
need their annual booster) that makes for a huge difference in expenses.
This is just ONE cost of sheltering. If Merial weren't so difficult to work
with our shelter would feel more comfortable with working with them. It's
too bad that it all boils down to the almighty dollar! And also, too bad
that one company has the monopoly on our ferret vaccines!

Ferret hugs,
Kathy
