Dr. Murray, thanks for the info. Actually Kevin from the WA shelter posted not
long ago and said that many of those who died were vaccinated, but with only one
shot and no vaccination history. I guess at this point I'm wondering how in the
world did I miss this important piece of info that critters with no vaccination
history need TWO boosters 3 weeks apart? I mean I've been running my shelter
for 12 years now, through two EXCELLENT vets and in all this time I've never
come across the important information that the critters coming in (the vast
majority of which have no vaccination history, other than perhaps one shot
before leaving Marshall Farms as a kit) need two boosters, that one really isn't
doing them any good? I feel both exasperated and frankly, very lucky! We
routinely take in strays and we certainly do have distemper afoot here in
Michigan. Ugh! I'm glad we can be confident going forward...guess we dodged a
rather large bullet here, 'eh?
One last question: let's say I have a ferret come in at age 3. I give the two
boosters three weeks apart, so now critter is protected. Then a year later his
new owner (hopefully!) gives one booster. But then the next year for some
reason the shot schedule gets mixed up and critter doesn't get his annual
booster at the right time. Is there a window of time to work with here? Let's
say the owner is 3 months late giving the needed annual booster. Should they
give the two boosters 3 weeks apart then? Let's say the owner waited one
month...or two...or three...or 4...know what I mean? Not sure what is known
here but I'd like to be able to give proper advice. Sometimes folks adopt a
critter that's vaccinated in January, then their existing ferret is vaccinated
in March...is it known how much play there is in the scheduling?
Thanks again for all this great info, Jerry, Ruth, Kevin from the WA shelter,
Debi...I'm feeling much better about what to do going forward for my critters!
