Oh, ONE last question! :) So now I'm looking at my current population, all of
whom have only one booster on board after coming into the shelter with no
vaccination history. Do I need to take EVERYONE for the two boosters three
weeks apart to catch up, to make sure all are protected? Or can I look at when
that one was done and do I have a window of play here? Obviously I'll choose
the safer choice...just thinking about booking a 3 hour long visit! hahaha I
have about a dozen Galaxy D shots left so I'll only use them in tandem for the 3
week apart plan, then switch to Purevac...not sure how that will factor into the
answer either. Sheesh! :)

Hi Kathy, Nanci and Debi
Kathy-you are right. Merial's Purevax ferret distemper does cost
more than Galaxy D did. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do
about that.
Debi- I am glad you are requiring a distemper vaccine and an ADV test
before ferrets enter your shelter! I would also suggest giving a booster
of the distemper vaccine in 3 weeks and then yearly.
Nanci- for adult ferrets I would suggest giving the distemper booster
3 weeks after the first dose. For kits I would give the distemper vaccine
at 6, 9, 12, 15 weeks of age (ie every 3 weeks). Remember that Marshall
Farms and most ferret farms give that first dose before they ship their
kits.
Sadly from what I heard about the distemper outbreak at the shelter
in the Seattle area, the ferrets were not vaccinated. Thus when a ferret
brought distemper into the shelter, there were several ferrets that came
down with distemper.
This should remind everybody how important it is for a ferret to be
vaccinated
properly (especially at a shelter) to prevent this deadly disease.
Hope that clears up the confusion,
Jerry Murray, DVM
