Hi, Norbert, and everyone else.

With all due respect I was more than a little taken aback by your
post. The reaction rate for ferrets to Merial Purevax, the approved
distemper vaccination, is ~2%, with mostly mild reactions. You can
reduce the risk of a reaction by pretreating with Benadryl. Severe
reactions are rare. Over the years I have seen a total of two ferrets
go into anaphylactic shock, a life threatening reaction, after
receiving a rabies vaccine. Where I live rabies vaccination is
mandatory which presented a real problem. I described how our vet
pretreated Nyssa to avoid a repeat at
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/YG6921

There are times I have skipped or delayed vaccinations based on the
advice of our vet. It's always when a ferret is compromised in some
way and the vaccinations would pose a real risk. Having said that, I
would never skip vaccinating for distemper in healthy ferrets with no
reaction history and I would discuss if pretreatment might be an
option for the one who had the reaction with the vet. As others have
pointed out CDV can be brought into your home by people. The risk of
not vaccinating out of fear just isn't worth it IMNSHO.

All the best,
