While I agree that age should not be the primary consideration, I tend to agree with Jeff, especially given the degree of complication and extent of the proposed surgery.

Now if I had a ferret expert veterinary surgeon who had years of experience with geriatric patients, I might reconsider. But that's a HUGE maybe.

Anal gland surgery in an adult ferret is known to have high risk of complications. In this case there was little choice because of the chronic problems encountered. This patient is not simply compromised because of his advanced age but he has a host of serious and challenging health issues. In other words, any surgery would not be straight forward, even for an experienced veterinary surgeon.

For example, if this little guy has prostatic cysts/abscesses they are notoriously difficult to treat.

It does sound like the veterinary team is experienced and certainly knowledgeable and I would defer to their expertise and act in accordance if this was my little one.

The fact that he has reached 8 years of age indicates that he was well cared for and much loved.
