Hi, Tressie, and everyone else,

In light of your comments I'd like to clarify my previous post.

First, yes, in both cases my ferrets were treated by outstanding
veterinary surgeons who have fantastic track records and are highly
respected for their work. In both cases I knew of many successful
outcomes with geriatric ferrets.

In both of the cases where I made the decision the choice I was
presented with by the vet was surgery or euthanasia. When that is the
choice and there vet believes there is a real chance of success I feel
that opting for surgery is the way to go. Some chance is better than
none. It seems like the situation with Cinnabon, at least as
described in the post to the list, is indeed life or death. I can't
blame his owner for trying to save a beloved member of the family. In
her position I would do the same.

I need to make it clear that I am encouraging surgery only if the vet
feels that it is Cinnabon's last, best chance and that there is a
reasonable chance for success. That was the case when I made the
decision to go ahead with my own ferrets. I do feel that surgery on
an eight year old is often too risky when there are other treatment
options. However, when you run out of options you do what you can.

All the best,
Caity with the dynamic duo
