Subject: [ferrethealth] Hi i am new here and just adopted a ferret that is extremely thin
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I was wondering if anyone here knew what the best diet would be for a ferret that is extremely thin. We responded to an add that listed a ferret that needed to be rehomed due to not having adequate time to take care of him. When we first seen the ferret we knew that we had to adopt him or else his future did not look very good if he stayed with these people. He was so thin and when i picked him up all i could feel was bones all through his little frail body. Since we have had him i have done alot of research on the internet but i am still confused as to what diet would be best for him as they list so so many to choose from. He has put on some weight since coming to live with us and i am happy at this point with the results i am seeing but i know there has to be a perfect diet for him. I am just wondering if anyone might know of a web site i could go to for some good information or maybe if someone actually knew what kind of diet would be best to put weight on him and better his health. I called my vet and he does not see ferrets and so i called some others but have not yet found one that does care for ferrets. Thanks so very much to all of you that took your time to read this and respond. I appreciate any and all feedback i can get at this point. Have a blessed day everyone :)

[It is important that he is seen by a ferret knowledgeable veterinarian, or at the very least a ferret friendly vet who is prepared to receive guidance or consult with knowledgeable colleagues. His current state of health may due to an illness as well as poor diet. Where are you located? If we know where you are, someone may recommend a vet within travel distance. In the interim, if you can start him on supplemental feeding with Hills Prescription A/D or Carnivore Care (powdered supplement)- both have to be procured from veterinarians. I am sure other posters will recommend some healthy food/diets for him. BUT most important is to get him to a ferret knowledgeable vet. - Moderator (TD)]
