Subject: [ferrethealth] erythropoietin - anti anemic medicine
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Our ferret which had a spleen removal surgery came back after a month (biopsy test came back negative for lymphoma) with severe anemia. Her hemoglobin count was less than 5 g/dl.

The vet gave her blood transfusion and kept her on supportive medication. Now she is feeling a little better, but the fuzzy is still too weak to make a full hematologic blood test.

My question is related to a specific substance called Erythropoietin. I've learnt that it comes in two versions: beta and alpha. After some research, we discovered that the alpha version is good for ferrets, but it's pretty hard to find it here, also in a lower concentration or one that we could split to reach the specific dose for ferrets.

Is there any problem if we use beta?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Roxana
