Hi Jane,

It's great that you are taking the time to do your research before committing to a ferret. There are plenty of good websites and forums out there that can give you lots of valuable information about ferrets. I would also suggest the book, "Ferrets for Dummies". Petco sells it. I bought the book and read it cover-to-cover before I got my first ferret.

Some people are really against Petco selling ferrets. They come from a large breeding outfit in New York, Marshall's Farms. Some people think they are not as healthy as a ferret from a private breeder, but that can be debated. I have friends with ferrets from a private breeder and they've had health problems...and some Marshall's ferrets live long, healthy lives.

Do be forewarned, though. Ferrets do have a tendency toward certain illnesses and they can be very expensive if they get sick. Also, they must be vaccinated against canine distemper and rabies, just like your dogs. Also heartworm and flea preventative is a must. It's good to be aware of this before you decide to bring a baby home. Too many ferret owners have had to give up their ferrets to rescue because the ferret became ill and the owners didn't have the money or time to devote to their pet. It is very sad.

That is another route you could go, as far as choosing a new ferret. You might want to visit a local rescue or shelter and meet some rescued ferrets that are up for adoption. They are lovely.  Plus, the shelter owner and volunteers could answer your questions.

Hope this helps a little. There is a lot to share about ferrets! If you are on Facebook, you can join a ferret forum, Ferret Owners. There are lots of knowledgable people there, too!

Best of luck and let us know what you decide!

Susan
