i would like to suggest along with learning all you can also that you find a good ferret vet near you. lots of times i have called vet to ask if they see ferrets to only find out that they dont treat ferrets but do know what they are.. you might also want to spend time with ferrets. a rescue is a good place to make sure its the pet for you.. to many times i have people bring ferrets that have said i didnt know how much work they were. ferrets are a long term deal your looking at any where from 6 - 10 years you also need to think about your pets interacting ferrets and cats can and do get along good with dogs. its alot about the breed.and the age of the dogs
