I think the assumption that something used to treat would therefore be used as preventative is the problem here.

Vit A use was initially studied with measles in humans, which seemed to be useful- now measles virus also seems somehow related to the distemper virus and I think that is where the idea of trying Vit A came into play.  Vit A is a retinoid and I think theory is it interferes with the viral replication but never proven and there are other theories. . Now in humans all I can find is that vit A is recommended in countries where vit A deficiency is high and it actually helps the immune system.  So, in humans vit A is recommended to 'prevent' vit A deficiency-which if both get measles and are vit A deficient will help prevent complications of the measles infection including blindness.

Having had distemper in my own ferrets, I did do some reading back when.  I would say when you are dealing with a disease that is just about 100% fatal ( those few that may live are neurologically impaired) and when your ferret gets this, you will try anything.  And something like vit A seems harmless enough ( at least in controlled doses).

The only preventative we have for distemper is vaccination, and that should be done long before any actual exposure as it takes time for the vaccine to be effective.  healthier the animal the better the chance will not get the virus, but once is sick and is distemper then choices are limited.

I see no evidence vit A will do anything to keep a ferret from getting distemper who was exposed.  But if vit A deficiency is a possibility in ferrets, then supplementation is helpful. Not sure how prevalent that would be. AND when have distemper vit A does seem to help. But precautions in that there is vit A toxicity too, so should know what doses are given and how much would be too much, etc.
