Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Distemper
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My goodness, talk about a conversation wandering!
Salmon oil which is an omega 3 fatty acid source
really has nothing to do with the topic of distemper.
You can use fish oil for the same reason, or can use
flax seed oil, but do remember that flax seed oil goes
bad pretty easily so needs refrigeration. (We also
refrigerate fish oil, BTW.) Omega 3 fatty acids can
be very healthy but are not related to the topic of
distemper.

Now, cod liver oil, on the other hand, does have a lot
of vitamin A in it, which is on topic, but having sufficient
(not too much and not too little Vitamin A) is certainly no
substitute for vaccinating, nor for running titers in
adulthood to make make sure that the ferret is sufficiently
protected. The amount of Vitamin A which is reasonable
for ferrets (and do not forget the other sources also
consumed) can be found by reading this article:

http://jn.nutrition.org/content/137/8/1916.full.pdf+html

Is it just that people forgot to change the conversation
topic or was there confusion about the oils, or both?
In case any participants in the conversation fall into the
last two categories I have added this information under the
same subject line.
