A lot of times, the pred makes them lose a bit of weight. After awhile, they get very boney, no matter how well they still eat. I had this happen with Rufus and now with Charlee too. And she was tiny to begin with! As long as your vet is not concerned with the weight loss, he's probably doing just fine with how you are feeding him. Toward the end, Rufus (who was almost 9 when he passed) had trouble crunching kibble, so I'd put a bowl of moistened kibble in the cage for him. When he was younger, he wanted nothing to do with softened food, so I could tell he was really having trouble with the kibble.
I wish you luck with Watermelon! Rufus fought Insulinoma for 4 years, so don't give up hope. :)
