I agree with Sukie regarding temperature ranges at which ferrets are
comfortable. If the temperature in the home was 75 then I seriously doubt heat prostration was the cause. I would be more inclined to believe a toxin of some sort was to blame.

My home is typically at 77-78 during the summer months. I have two eight year old ferrets who are still active and playful. Chin Soon really doesn't know she's supposed to be old and thinks she's still a kit, complete with running, climbing, jumping, and scaring me half to death at times with the things she wants to try. OTOH, when we did have the A/C go out one day last summer and were waiting for repairs the ferrets really did slow down and become inactive as the temperature climbed into the 80s. I also agree with Sukie that ferrets look for cover when it gets cold. Maybe mine have adapted but their comfort range seems awfully close to my own.

The fact is that I live in the South. Temperatures in the mid to
upper 90s outside are the norm here. My electric bill is nearly
triple what it was in the winter, entirely due to A/C. Keeping it at
68 in the summer here is simply not practical. Temperatures under 80 degrees do not seem to have in any way harmed the health or longevity of my ferrets.

All the best,
Caity
with Zephyr and Chin Soon, the playful seniors
