Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Diet for Ferret w/Insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Personally, we have never seen weight loss from
Pred. Weight gain, yes. Staying the same, yes.

Now, that is not to say that it can't happen because
individuals do vary in their responses to medication,
and we've had our share of weird responses to other
meds in ferrets, some of them dangerous like when
one lost her thirst (the opposite of the normal
response) with Lasix which is a diuretic. Like people,
ferrets vary.

Insulinoma is not the only pancreatic problems which
can produce low blood glucose. Having either lymphoma
or carcinoma in the pancreas also can, and either one
can produce weight loss. Luckily, encountering those
in a pancreas is very rare. In about 30 years we have
only had one of each.

Nausea from insulinoma which is not yet well enough under
control with meds also can result in weight loss. Remember,
too, that the amounts of meds needed will change over the
course of insulinoma.

Another illness which some people describe as either causing
weight loss or weight gain is adrenal disease, a very common
illness with age. That tends to cause the fat deposits to shift,
so that many of the ferrets develop a marked pear shape, with
the thorax looking skinny (even with the ribs sticking out) but
the abdomen looking fat, so depending on which part of the
ferret is being described a person might say "skinny" or "fat",
though a smaller percentage of ferrets do just go either way.
