Ultrasound is usually not particularly useful for
pancreatic tumors in ferrets. If it is done as a
double cavity ultrasound, though, it is useful as
a pre-op heart check to make sure that there is
not a heart condition which would prevent surgery,
and to look for tumors elsewhere.

Imaging the heart with either ultrasound or x-ray
before surgery is a good idea over the age of 6 years
or younger in ferrets who cause the vet to be cautious
on that score. Pre-op you also want a CBC and a
Chem Panel, and if the vet runs a urine concentration
with ferrets that is the surest way to know if the kidneys
are functioning within reasonable limits.

If there results of two blood tests: CBC and Chemistry
Panel are very off for multiple organs then the chances
of either lymphoma or carcinoma in the pancreas are
higher.

When we personally have encountered those two illnesses
in the pancreas the first symptoms with each was almost
dying. In fact, both needed artificial respiration with careful,
small cheek puffs to muzzle, and one also needed warming.

With those illnesses also using diazoxide really seems to
help and in both situations we also needed to provide dietary
sugars which were readily available.

Insulinoma has the longest survival time of those three.
Carcinoma has the worst.

Pancreatitis is another pancreas problem ferrets can get;
those who have experience with that can teach here now, please...
There are also past posts on these things in the wonderful and
easily used separate FHL archives with over 10 years of past
posts. It can be linked to from the FHL website, or can be
reached directly at the second addy in my sig lines.
