Subject: [ferrethealth] Zephyr update (8 y/o - A/V node heart block, cardiomyopathy, heart failure)
To: ferrethealth <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Hi, everyone,

Since last Monday evening Zephyr has been on Furosemide and Enalapril
for cardiomyopathy/heart failure and Aminophylline for A/V node heart block. As of Friday Zephyr still had a very low heart rate (68), still had serious hind end weakness and was very low energy. She was walking around a bit more and eating well but we really weren't seeing the hoped-for result from the Aminophylline.

Our vet consulted with a veterinary cardiologist who suggested Levsin
might help. Our vet did not know of anyone using Levsin in ferrets
but wanted to try it in addition to the Aminophylline. Yesterday
morning Zephyr started on the generic, Hyoscyamine, 0.025mg/ml, 0.15ml
3x a day.

Tonight Zephyr had a normal run/playtime lasting about two hours. By
normal I mean vintage Zephyr. The hind end weakness was very much
reduced and she did all of her favorite play things, gave kisses when
I picked her up, begged for treats, you name it. She still
occasionally shudders, kind of like a super strong shiver, but that is
the only outward sign that anything at all is wrong.

After she settled in I checked her heart rate. Assuming I counted
correctly it was 172.

I don't know if this will be a consistent result or how long it will
last but the improvement for tonight was nothing short of amazing.
I'll keep the list posted on how she does.

All the best,
Caity with the once-again dynamic duo
Zephyr and Chin Soon
