Time for a visit to the vet!

My vet told me years ago never to clean my ferrets' ears because they keep themselves clean. Companions do a good job of cleaning each other's ears.

In his view ,and that of other veterinarians at a conference he attended was that cleaning will lead to irritation, which in turn will make the ears susceptible to ear mites and infections. The more one cleans the more waxy discharge is produced to try to deal with the effects of cleaning.

I know that cleaning ferrets' ears is a common practise but it is 'old school'.

If there is that much gunk, especially if its black its likely an ear mite infestation and will require treatment from the vet.

Soooo..... next time someone asks you "How do I clean my ferret's ears?"

Answer, "You don't!"
