Subject: [ferrethealth] the "dangle method" of assist feeding
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

One of my ferrets, Peppermint Patty has not been feeling well for a couple of days (has been to the vet and is being cared for, of course!) and has not felt like eating on her own. I offered her about a half a jar of turkey baby food, which she just picks at until I hold her around the chest behind her front legs with the rest of her body just hanging there. Held in that position, she will eat twice as much food as she would being held normally or with her feet on the floor.

I noticed this phenomenon first last year with Linus, who needed some help eating enough to keep his insulinoma at bay. I thought it was kind of a fluke, but when Patty did the same thing I wondered if it was a common thing for ferrets to eat better with their feet dangling. Maybe they just get the idea "Momma means business, better eat this stuff!"

Anyone else seen this?
