Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Questions... on vaccines
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Many people choose not to vaccinate for rabies, myself included, due to the extremely low incidence rate in ferrets. I feel that there is more risk in the potential for a bad reaction to the vaccine than in contracting the disease itself, especially with ferrets that do not leave the house other than to go to the vet. However, I also live in an area where the law does not require a rabies vaccination.
If you do choose to vaccinate against rabies, I would suggest that you do it at a separate time from when you vaccinate for canine distemper. If your ferret has a bad reaction, you want to know which vaccine he was reacting to.
For canine distemper, Merial’s Purevax is the only ‘proven’ ferret vaccine, although Galaxy D used to be used regularly. It is not being manufactured any more. So you might want to request that your vet use the Purevax rather than any remaining Galaxy D that may be on hand.

Ferrets should be vaccinated for canine distemper and rabies.
