Subject: [ferrethealth] Adrenal treatment options (was Re: Questions...)

Hi, Susan, and everyone else:

It's clearly not the only treatment for adrenal disease but the vets I
trust all still say it is the only cure. I think of Ella, my recently
departed girl who lived nearly six years after her adrenal surgery
with no recurrence, a beautiful coat, and no need for any medications.
Clearly, for her, surgery was the right answer. Chin Soon had her
surgery at five and a half. Today she is a playful, happy, beautiful
high energy eight year old with no further medical issues. I don't
know that you can achieve that sort of result with non-surgical
treatment.

Having said that, there are times that surgery clearly is too risky
and deslorelin or lupron are the best answers. I had a ferret named
Podo who had a recurrence of adrenal at nine years old. He also had
cardiomyopathy and insulinoma and surgery was simply not possible for
him. He was the poster child for lupron depot. It completely
relieved his symptoms for the remainder of his life.

I don't believe there is one right answer for all ferrets. Each has
to be evaluated individually and the owner and vet need to decide what
is the best course of action. There are times I still think surgery
is the right answer and there are other times when it clearly isn't.

The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet. I don't even play one
on TV. I'm just a moderately experienced ferret owner.

All the best,
Caity and the dynamic duo
