I go back to the years before there was a USDA approved rabies vaccine for ferrets and have heard of way too many UNvaccinated ferrets who died because of that. They mostly did not die because they got rabies (though a few did). They mostly died because without proof of sufficient vaccination all that it takes for the animal to be destroyed is the ACCUSATION of a bite. In fact, there were multiple cases back then of people having bitter exes who had authorities grab the animals and destroy them by saying that a bite had happened, had since healed, but that they were worried.

After the rabies vaccine but before the CDC did the necessary work to understand rabies fully in ferrets there also were a lot of ferrets lost to such concerns, and a number of states banned ferrets back then for that very reason. In fact, after the CDC work was done there rapidly were more ferrets saved because of the improvements to the Compendium of Animal Rabies Control than there were who died for the studies. That was the expected outcome, BTW.
